In the 17th century the Dutch doctor Boerhaave prescribed Dutch black candied sugar for throat ache and colds. 
Other words for kandij suiker are: candied sugar, rock sugar, candy sugar.
Brown (candied) sugar derived from sugar beet tastes significantly different from brown candied sugar from cane sugar: it has a more caramel taste.
